What is LoRaWAN®?

LoRaWAN® is a wireless communication protocol designed to enable communication between electronic devices. It is a LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technology aimed at bridging the gap between long-range cellular communication (3G, 4G, 5G) and short-range wireless communication (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC). LoRaWAN® is based on LoRa (Long Range) transmission technology and can cover distances up to 20 km in the open field. From a physical perspective, a free 868 MHz- band is employed, together with a radio modulation by which the information runs on a wider bandwidth than the actual need. This allows us to take advantage of transmission power levels below the noise threshold while providing a considerable interference immunity.
How does it work?
The architecture underlying all IoT solutions employing LoRaWAN® technology can be schematized as follows: peripheral devices such as sensors, actuators and meters, they all talk bidirectionally with concentrators (Gateways) that are placed in the territory and constitute the LoRaWAN® IoT network. The data, coming from the peripheral devices and captured by the network, is then sent to the cloud server of the network operator via a backhauling infrastructure, such as fiber optics. The network server, in turn, manages all this data and provides it to the application server so that the final user can have access to it via app or web.

OUR
RESEARCH PROJECT
FOR THE INTERNET OF THINGS
In 2020, we entered into an agreement with the Faculty of Computer Engineering at the University of Salerno for the refinement of smart metering technologies, i.e., remote meter reading and remote management systems related to the use of IoT technology.
THE EXPERIMENTATION
LoRaWAN®:
We have applied LoRaWAN® technology to water meters by taking part in two pilot projects. The goal is to obtain real-time readings of water consumption while immediately detecting faults and malfunctions on the supply network and intervening the quickest possible to sort them out.

1.PAESTUM RECLAMATION CONSORTIUM
The first pilot project launched in collaboration with the Paestum Reclamation Consortium will enable real-time data reading coming from 100 meters..
2.ACQUEDOTTO PUGLIESE, MOTTOLA CITY
We collaborated with the Municipality of Mottola in the experimental phase of the smart metering project initiated by Acquedotto Pugliese. Here we implemented the LoRaWAN® infrastructure for monitoring a total of about 2,500 meters. As a result, we were able to implement some web services for acquiring, saving and analyzing metered consumption data.
